Stem Cells The Origin Of An Organism s Life Essay

Stem Cells â€Å"In the beginning, there is the stem cell; it is the origin of an organism s life. It is a single cell that can give rise to progeny that differentiate into any of the specialized cells of embryonic or adult tissues.† This is a very simple explanation of stem cells by Dr. Stewart Sell, a cancer researcher. Stem cells are more or less blank cells. They are identical cells that can adapt to specialized cell types. There are two types of stem cells according to the U.S. Department of Health Human Service â€Å"embryonic stem cells and non-embryonic somatic or adult stem cells.† In this paper, I will touch on roughly every aspect of stem cells. Stem cells can come from several places. Embryonic stem cells come from embryos; they are fertilized in labs. It is important to note that the eggs are not fertilized in a woman s body. At the time of removal, the embryos are at least three days old. The U.S Department of Health Human Service defines an adult cell as â€Å"an undifferentiated cell, found among differentiated cells in a tissue or organ.† Before removal, the role of the adult stem cell is to preserve and mend the tissue of its host. There are multiple ways to harvest stem cells. The Canadian Cancer Society list several ways that stem cells are removed. Stem cells can be taken from bone marrow, blood, and umbilical cords.
